RATING: 3/5

This book was a lot different from the movie, and I really liked the movie more, which doesn't tend to happen because books are always better than movies. But not in this case.

If you haven't seen the movie, it's visually thrilling. So reading the book just didn't have the same effect. For one, the book focuses a lot more on Pi's childhood and his interest in religion. It went on and on about religion, so that kind of bored me. The first half of the book was really a drag to get through. I just wanted to skip ahead to the part where he's abandoned at sea.

When it finally got to the part where the ship sank, is wasn't as dramatic as I thought it'd be. In fact, the whole book was very slow. If I didn't already know what an awesome story it was because of the movie, I probably would've given up onn this book in the very beginning. But I kept at it because I knew it'd be worth reading. It got more interesting when he was at sea, discussing his day-to-day survival on the sea with his partner, a Bengal tiger.

I do like how there are two voices in the book. There's a writer who meets with Pi to listen to his story in hopes of turning it into a book. So occassionally, Pi's narration of his story is interrupted with the writer giving us insight about Pi's life after he was rescued and started a family in Canada. So you know he has a happy ending after all.

Definitely an interesting read and I can see why they wanted to turn it into a movie, but I would prefer watching it than reading it.
