Similarly to Life of Pi, I liked the movie better than the book. This is another type of movie where I think visuals really move the story along. There were also a lot of differences in the book vs. the movie.
1) I liked the addition of Wybie in the movie. And how the Other Mother sewed his mouth shut in her world.
2) There's a scene in the book where Coraline fights Other Father in a basement. It was really creepy to read. They probably altered that fight scene in the movie to make it less scary. In the movie, they fight outside in the garden.
3) Coraline has a doll that acts at the eyes of the Other Mother. It's how she watched Coraline and leads her to the door. Really creepy since I hate dolls but I liked that in the movie.
4) I also liked how the door in the movie was tiny. It made it a lot more fascinating and mysterious. In the book, it's just a normal sized door.
There are some other differences, but those didn't affect me as much. Overall, the book was a lot creepier than the movie. The movie made things more colorful, which was a nice effect to soften the creepiness. It was still interesting to read the book though and see the differences.
